Killing 2 birds with 1 stone isn’t my favorite quote, but I’m a sucker for efficiency. Who wouldn’t want to accomplish 2 things at once? I know, I know. Multitasking has become a bad word these days but this type is good for the soul.

The holidays are around the corner and even though I’m a minimalist, I'm a maximalist when it comes to giving gifts. Gifting is a real skill and being thoughtful in what I buy is important. To me, the best gifts have these 3 qualities:

  • It’s useful to the receiver
  • It benefits the community
  • I’m hella proud to give it

The best gifts have 3 qualities: it's useful, it benefits the community, and I'm hella proud to give it.

Not only is it exciting to find that perfect gift, generosity itself can also make you happier. A study published in Nature Communications in 2017 by Park et al. looked at the effects of generosity on the brain. They found that people who were more generous had greater activity in areas of the brain that control happiness. Interestingly, they also saw that the happiness experienced wasn’t related to the amount of money spent. Get more deets on this study on our latest episode on Science Says.

So if you’re in the market for gifts, try to make it count double by also supporting a cause. Philanthropic companies are everywhere nowadays and you can find that cause-worthy gift whether you’re a die hard fan for education or animals.

Below are 5 of my favorite philanthropic companies and some wallet-friendly gifts to consider. Of course, I have a favorite, but I’ll let you guess which one it is.

If you’re in the market for gifts, try to make it count double by also supporting a cause.

Lush

It’s winter and dry skin plagues us all. Lush sells a body lotion that softens your skin while supporting “small grassroots organizations working in the areas of human rights, animal protection and environmental justice.'' They donate 100% of the price (minus the taxes) to these causes.

Found My Animal

This gift isn’t technically for humans but for our 4-legged besties. Found My Animal makes some seriously stylish pet accessories. But best of all, they are all about animal welfare, rescue organizations, and pet adoption.

Leksi

Here’s a treat for you and your human BFF. We know you’re up-to-date on the deets, but just to recap: with magic Leksi AI you can make an audio version of your notes, articles, and other study materials, so you can listen to it wherever, whenever you want. Like when you’re driving, walking, exercising, trying to nap. Literally, whenever.

Your notes can be music to your ears for less than a couple cups of grande lattes. Not to mention, you’ll be giving children the opportunity to get an education. Pretty rad!

Yoobi

Who doesn’t love bright spiral notebooks, especially for $2.99? Go ahead, splurge on a matching pencil. Like Leksi, Yoobi supports education by providing free school supplies to students in need.

Feed

Give the gift of light, aromatherapy, and school meals with a candle from Feed. Feed is an organization that provides school meals to children in vulnerable communities. If you’re more into bags and accessories, they have that too! I can attest to the quality of their bags because I use mine daily.

Generosity leads to more happiness. Who woulda thought? Head over to Leksi to see how we give back to our community.
